Associational Mission Strategist

Dr. Danny Courson

Danny began serving as the Associational Mission Strategist for St. Clair Baptist Association in June, 2019. He came to STCBA from Odena Baptist Church in Sylacauga where he served as pastor for 15 years. Before that he served as pastor of Taylorville Baptist Church in Tuscaloosa for 4 years, and pastor of Smyrna Baptist Church in Vienna, Georgia for 3 1/2 years.

Danny grew up in Birmingham, AL and graduated from Banks High School. Knowing the Lord was calling him to ministry, he did his Senior Year Internship with Huffman Baptist Church in Church Recreation. While attending Samford University, he was a member of Koinania, a Contemporary Christian Ensemble that traveled and sand around the state. He was active in Baptist Student Ministries and served as a summer missionary all 4 years of college, serving two summers in Missouri, one in Kentucky, and one in Lake Placid, New York.

Danny graduated from Samford University in 1988 with a BA in Religious Education. He served for two years with ALSBOM as an Area Campus Minister, serving Gadsden State, Snead State, and Northeast Community College. Next he served as Youth Minister/Associate Pastor with College Heights Baptist in Gadsden, AL. Following that he served as Minister of Youth and Children with Hillcrest Baptist Church in Enterprise, AL. In 1994 he moved to Tuscaloosa to serve as Minister of Music and Youth at Taylorville Baptist Church. He shared with the search committee that God was leading him towards pastoral ministry. Taylorville provided him opportunities to preach, helped him attend seminary, and called him to serve in his first pastoral role.

In 1999 he completed the Master of Divinity Degree from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.

In 2010 he completed the Doctor of Ministry Degree from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. His doctoral project was the creation of a training curriculum on the role of encouragement in ministry.

Danny has a heart for pastors and their families, as well as for the church. Serving as an Associational Mission Strategist, (Director of Missions, Associational Missionary, etc.) has been a natural transition as he loves to pray for, encourage, and support pastors and churches in any way possible.

Danny is married to Rhonda Wheeler Courson, who has spent most of her career in education as an English Teacher. She currently serves as Assistant Principal at Sylacauga High School. Danny and Rhonda have three children: Samuel (born in 1998), Timothy (born in 2000), and Ruthie (born in 2006). They also have two dogs, and two cats.
